The mission of the SMART Smiles Program is to provide oral health education and preventative care to underserved, school-aged children, while helping to create a positive dental environment and implement a referral system for necessary dental treatment. SMART Smiles is a community-led project attracting local dental professionals, service organizations, local and state agencies, and other interested volunteers who want to be part of a rewarding project that makes a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of elementary children.
SMART Smiles was started by long-time volunteer and TDASF Access Committee Member, Jennifer Banton, RDH. Mrs. Banton piloted the program in Burnet County ISD in 2013, providing 230 children with over $84,000 worth of dental care. In late 2014, the program was officially adopted into the TDASF family of charitable dental care programs, and through a grant received by United Way of Williamson County in 2015, the program will be expanding throughout the Central Texas region this year. Since inception, SMART Smiles has provided 741 low-income students with nearly $275,000 worth of free, preventative dental care.
